Halifax NA522 near Hotham.
During the afternoon of 5th June 1944 this 76 Squadron aircraft was flown on an airtest. Shortly after taking off the constant speed units failed on the port outer, port inner and starboard inner engine which saw all the propellers feather themselves. The crew appear to have been heading back towards their base at Holme on Spalding Moor but the aircraft was unable to maintain height so a forced landing had to be made with the wheels in a field in the Hotham / North Cave area at 13.05hrs. The aircraft was badly damaged but all appear to have escaped injury. The C.S.U.'s were taken apart to discover the faults and incorrect manufacturing was to blame. The full crew list is given in William Chorley's Bomber Command losses book but I have yet to locate a source document that lists them so have not copied Mr Chorley's research though I do not dispute it.
Pilot - P/O Neil Francis Conway RAAF (415970).
