Halifax NA511 near Full Sutton airfield.

During the early hours of 6th June 1944 this 77 Squadron aircraft was to have been flown on an operational flight to bomb the Maisy gun battery in Normandy ahead of the D-Day invasion. At 01.05hrs the aircraft took off from Full Sutton but after climbing to just 100 feet one of the starboard engines failed. The aircraft would not climb further so the pilot force landed on the north-east side of the airfield, near Fairfield Farm and all on board were injured. All the crew managed to get out of the aircraft before a fire took hold and the aircraft was destroyed by both the fire and bombs exploding. The photograph shown above shows the crash site the following day once the aircraft had been torn apart by the bomb load exploding. At 01.25hrs Halifax LL544 and Halifax NA520 collided on the perimeter track with the the attention of all involved being diverted to the burning NA511 nearby.
