Halifax MZ877 at Carnaby airfield.
During the morning of 12th November 1944 this 466 Squadron aircraft was being used to carry out a circuits and landings training exercise at Driffield airfield. On one of the take offs the pilot accidentally left the flaps extended fully and as the aircraft picked up speed the port inner engine began to fail. The aircraft swung off the runway and although the pilot managed to eventually get the aircraft airborne the port wheel clipped the bank of a drainage ditch after it had just left the ground. Once in the air the crew found that the port undercarriage leg would not raise properly and would also not lower. After an hour flying the crew were diverted to land at the emergency landing strrip at Carnaby where they made a belly landing.
Pilot - F/O Mervyan Shephard Paddon RAAF (437153).
