Halifax MZ732 at Carnaby airfield.

On 6th July 1944 this 76 Squadron aircraft took off from Holme on Spalding Moor airfield at 19.10hrs with the crew tasked with flying an operational flight to bomb a V-1 target at Croixdalle. This was the second operational flight this crew flew in this aircraft on this date. The crew released the bomb load onto the target area at 21.17hrs from 15,000 feet and turned for home. In flight a warning light came on in the cockpit that warned the crew of a problem with the tail wheel mechanism so the crew were ordered to divert to land at the emergency landing strip at Carnaby. On landing there at 23.30hrs the undercarriage operated properly and without incident but the aircraft could not be stopped on the available runway and it overshot. It came to rest in a wood beyond the runway. The aircraft must have been fairly badly damaged as it was later written off after assessment but all on board appear to have escaped injury.
