Halifax MZ731 at Riccall airfield.
During the afternoon of 24th October 1944 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on what was the trainee pilot's first dual instruction. The aircraft took off from Riccall airfield at around 13.10hrs. A few minutes later the crew had flown a circuit of the airfield and the trainee pilot was being allowed to land the aircraft. Shortly after touching down the starboard tyre burst. As soon as the aircraft began to swing off the runway the instructor took over control but he could not correct the swing or prevent the aircraft's starboard undercarriage leg collapsing.
Pilot (instructor) - F/Lt John Page DFC RAFVR (142144).
Pilot (pupil) - P/O Paul Oleynik RCAF (J/88561).
