Halifax MZ707 at Riccall airfield.
During the morning of 1st November 1944 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise at Riccall airfield with a trainee crew flying the aircraft. At 09.32hrs and during one of the landings the pilot landed normally at Riccall, when, without warning the tail wheel assembly collapsed. The tail wheel assembly on the Halifax dogged it's service and it was thought that the unit on this aircraft had been weakened by a series of earlier heavy landings culminating in this eventual failure.
Pilot - P/O George Ernest Walker RAFVR (183389).
