Halifax MZ641 damaged in the air, landed at Dishforth airfield.
On the night of 8th / 9th June 1944 this 425 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb a target at Mayenne and took off from Tholthorpe airfield at 23.05hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto target markers from 4,000 feet at 01.46hrs. On their return to the general area of the Vale of York the visibility quickly and unexpectedly deteriorated. At around 04.00hrs the pilot believed that he saw lights of another aircraft infront of him so attempted to dive below them to avoid a collision. Unfortunately the height the aircraft was flying was not much higher than 300 feet off the ground but in could and the lights were actually lights on the ground. A line of high tension wires were in front of the aircraft and as the aircraft lost height it flew through the wires. Minor damage resulted to the aircraft but in seeing what turned out to be the landing lights of Dishforth airfield a landing was swiftly made at 04.10hrs. One member of the crew sustained injuries.
