Halifax MZ640 at Leconfield airfield.

At 11.10hrs on 23rd September 1944 this 640 Squadron aircraft was in the process of taking off from Leconfield so the crew could carry out a practice bombing exercise when the aircraft swung off the runway. The pilot over-corrected the swing and the aircraft came to rest with the undercarriage collapsed. A fire broke out in the starboard outer engine and spread to the airframe which would see it destroy the aircraft. All on board escaped injury.

Pilot - F/Sgt William Henry Bishop RAFVR (1338729).
