Halifax MZ627 damaged in the air, landed at Pocklington airfield.
During the afternoon of 9th December 1944 this 425 Squadron aircraft was flown on a training flight. While in flight at between 13,000 and 14,000 feet altitude the starboard outer engine began to overspeed and then caught fire. The crew managed to extinguish the flames with the Graviner system but the aircraft then began to vibrate and so much so that the pilot ordered five of the crew to bale out. The pilot and flight engineer remained on board but while on the approach to make an emergency landing at Pocklington airfield and flying at 2,000 feet the propeller on the damaged engine flew off and the vibrating stopped. The pilot then managed to land the aircraft safely at Pocklington.
