Halifax MZ587 damaged in the air, returned to Tholthorpe airfield.
On the night of 7th / 8th July 1944 the crew of this 420 Squadron aircraft flew an operational flight to bomb a target at Caen and took off from Tholthorpe at 19.45hrs. The crew released their bomb load from 8,000 feet at 22.21hrs but while over the target area the aircraft was hit by flak and damage occurred to the astrodome. Despite the damage the crew returned to Tholthorpe and landed safely at 00.16hrs.
