Halifax MZ580 at Lissett airfield.

On the night of 15th / 16th September 1944 this 158 Squadron aircraft was used to fly an operational flight to bomb Kiel and took off from Lissett airfield at 21.14hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target area from 18,000 feet at 01.20hrs. On their return to land at Lissett at 03.50hrs the aircraft made an approach with a slight crosswind blowing. The aircraft drifted before touching down and then swung on landing. In trying to avoid a collision with another aircraft this aircraft struck an air raid shelter causing the undercarriage to collapse. The 158 Squadron records state that F/Sgt Powe and crew flew Halifax MZ337 but this aircraft had been lost on Ops on 13th / 14th September 1944. The ORB scribe had clearly not updated his list of aircraft in use. The AM Form 1180 gives the aircraft as being MZ580 and the AM Form 78 for this aircraft agrees with it having sustained damage on 16th September 1944.
