Halifax MZ558 at Burn airfield.
During the afternoon of 27th June 1944 this 578 Squadron aircraft was used to fly an operational flight to bomb a target at Marquise Mimoyecques and took off from Burn airfield at 15.59hrs. This crew released their bomb load onto the target area from 17,500 feet at 13.15hrs. At 15.59hrs the aircraft landed at Burn but the brakes failed, being unable to stop before the end of the runway the aircraft overshot and when the undercarriage passed over a ditch it broke causing damage to the aircraft. It was stated that this crew should have been diverted by flying control to land at Carnaby once they knew that the brake pressure was low prior to landing.
