Halifax MZ529 damaged in the air, landed safely at Croft airfield.
During early April 1944 431 Squadron were in the process of converting between Halifax Mk.V to Mk.III aircraft. Mk.V Halifax LL142 had been coded "-E" and left to 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit on 24th March 1944 to be replaced by Mk.III Halifax MZ529 on the same date. Details surrounding this incident are vague and the only reference to it currently located is in a No.6 Group flying control log. During the afternoon of 6th April 1944 "-E" suffered an engine fire in the air, the crew landed safely at Croft airfield. The damage to the aircraft must have been minor and would have been repaired on site. MZ529 was lost on Ops on 18th April 1944.
