Halifax MZ308 damaged in the air, landed at Driffield airfield.
On 22nd June 1944 the crew of this 466 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb Siracourt during the afternoon and took off from Driffield at 13.25hrs. On the approach to the target area the aircraft
was struck by flak and a piece struck the perspex nose. This then entered the aircraft. Flying perspex struck the air bomber in the head. Though the flak appears to have
missed him, it continued through the aircraft and lodged in the navigator's seat. Despite sustaining injuries to his forehead, right eye, right side of his face and his neck the crew continued to the target, released
their bomb load from 16,000 feet and made for home. On the return trip the crew did what first aid they could for the injured air bomber. They landed at Driffield at 17.17hrs and the injured airman was taken to
hospital. Five other 466 Squadron Halifaxes were damaged by flak on this night but the unit records do not identify which.
