Halifax MZ286 damaged in the air, landed at Lissett airfield.

During the afternoon of 21st May 1944 this 158 Squadron aircraft was flown on a cross country training exercise. In flight and while reducing height over the Goole area the crew heard a loud bang and an engine cowling on the starboard wing became distorted and probably damaged the engine or propeller. A vibration then effected the aircraft stemming from the damaged engine on the starboard wing so the crew shut down and feathered this engine. It became apparent that the bang in the air was the starboard tyre bursting because on landing at Lissett at 16.10hrs the aircraft swung badly though the undercarriage does not appear to have collapsed.
