Halifax LW691 at Leeming airfield.

On 8th May 1944 this 429 Squadron aircraft was flown on a fighter affiliation training exercise. On return to Leeming airfield the pilot made several failed approaches before finally going in to land. At 12.50hrs the aircraft landed but began to swing, the pilot did not correctly attempt to correct the swing and unfortunately the aircraft left the runway, swung out of control across the grass, passed in front of Hanger No.1 and eventually struck a pile of gravel or shale near some gun butts. It came to rest with the undercarriage collapsed. This incident appears to have seen the pilot taken off flying four engined aircraft and was posted to "R-Depot" towards the end of June 1944 for repatriation.

Pilot - F/Lt John Gellner DFC RCAF (J/2822).
