Halifax LW673 at Leconfield airfield.
During the evening of 13th September 1944 this 640 Squadron aircraft was to have been used to fly an operational flight to bomb a target the Nordstern oil plant at Gelsenkirchen. During the take off run at Leconfield airfield at 16.00hrs the power on the port inner engine dropped, the pilot reduced the power to all the engines and attempted to stop the aircraft but as the aircraft was to run over the airfield boundary he raised the undercarriage to bring to the aircraft to a halt. An investigation found that manufacturing fault within a Bristol modification engine component had caused the engine problem.
