Halifax LW658 at Lissett airfield.

On 18th July 1944 this 158 Squadron aircraft was one of four that was to have been flown on an operational flight to bomb a target at Vaires, Paris. At 15.28hrs as the aircraft picked up speed on the runway at Lissett airfield while taking off the port tyre burst, the aircraft swung off the runway and could not be brought to a halt before the port undercarriage collapsed. The port outer engine then caught fire but was soon put out. Minor damage to the aeroplane resulted. The squadron records do not list the full crew against this incident but it was almost certainly the named pilot's regular crew.

Pilot - F/Sgt Edwin Paulson RAAF (414954).
