Halifax LW552 damaged in the air, returned to East Moor airfield.

National Archives file "AIR14/3310" gives a series of questions from the Operational Research Section "O.R.S. Damage Inspector" in respect of damage to No.6 Group aircraft that sustained damage on operational sorties where damage was mentioned in squadron raid reports but not in other reporting methods. Upon checking the squadron records the damage to some of these aeroplanes is mentioned but other entries have no damage recorded against them. In the case of those where no further reference can be found I have made a note on each specific webpage.

AIR14/3310 states that 432 Squadron Halifax LW552 sustained flak damage to the under gun position on the night of 14th / 15th June 1944. Many of the 432 Squadron Halifaxes at this period in history had mid under turrets fitted to attempt to counteract the Luftwaffe night fighter technique of attacking bombers from below. The squadron records (AIR27/1860/28) do not mention damage occurring, they state that on the night of 14th / 15th June 1944 the crew of this 432 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb a V.1 weapon site at St.Pol and took off from East Moor airfield at 01.20hrs. They released their bomb load onto target markers from 9,100 feet at 03.16hrs. The crew returned to East Moor and landed at 05.09hrs. On this date LW552 carried a seven man crew so no one was in the under turret.
