Halifax LW548 damaged in the air, landed at Leeming airfield.

On the night of 15th / 16th March 1944 this 427 Squadron aircraft was used to flying an operational flight to bomb Stuttgart and took off from Leeming airfield at 18.55hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target area at 23.25hrs from 21,000 feet. Around the time of releasing their bomb load a flak burst struck the port wing and also the starboard wing was struck by falling incendiary bombs released by a higher flying aircraft. Despite the damage the crew flew back to Leeming and landed at 03.35hrs. When inspected a 4lb incendiary casing was found in the starboard wing.
