Halifax LW520 at Breighton airfield.

At 16.35hrs on 26th May 1944 this 78 Squadron aircraft was in the process of taking off from Breighton airfield so the crew could carry out a training exercise when the starboard tyre burst while still on the ground. The starboard wing dropped and the aircraft began to swing, the pilot was able to check the swing using the controls but as the aircraft was not on the concrete the starboard wheel ran into an area of soft ground. The starboard undercarriage sunk in the ground and broke causing the wing to then dig into the ground. It was thought that the starboard tyre had been damaged or punctured while taxying prior to take off, possibly by something sharp on the perimeter track.

Pilot - F/Lt George Arthur Marrows RAF (47708).
