Halifax LW496 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.
During the early hours of 28th May 1944 the crew of this 578 Squadron undertook an operational flight to bomb Bourg Leopold and took off from Burn airfield at 00.10hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target area from 10,000 feet at 02.13hrs but whilst over France the aircraft was attacked by a Dornier Do.217. The Halifax received some damage and the wireless operator received a bullet wound in his thigh. When the rear gunner returned fire the enemy aircraft broke away. For the rest of the flight thew crew changed positions. The rear gunner must have had some wireless operator training as he went to the wireless operator's position and also administered first aid. The mid upper gunner went to the rear turret and the bomb aimer went to the mid upper turret. Despite the damage the crew returned to Yorkshire and landed at Carnaby airfield at 04.30hrs. The injured wireless operator was taken to Driffield hospital and the bullet was found to have passed through his buttock, lodging under his belt. This crew had previously served with 51 Squadron.
