Halifax LW432 at Skipton on Swale airfield.
I believe that I have made an accurate guess as to what exactly happened with this incident. The only reference found is the AM Form 1180 and that only refers to when the aircraft was damaged. On the night of 3rd / 4th February 1944 this 424 Squadron aircraft was flown on a Bullseye training exercise. After a 4.25 hour flight and in a strong wind the aircraft landed at Skipton on Swale but the aircraft began to swing and left the runway. The pilot appears to have regained some form of control and managed to stop the aircraft but the tail unit became bogged down in soft ground. At 10.55hrs the following morning on 4th February 1944 the tail unit appears to have sustained minor damage, almost certainly when the aircraft was towed out. Only very minor damage must have resulted as it was soon repaired and was then used on Ops on 20th February 1944.
Pilot - F/O Peter Cameron Hamilton RCAF (J/11556).
