Halifax LW416 at Skipton on Swale airfield.

On the night of 26th / 27th March 1944 this 424 Squadron aircraft was used to fly an operational flight to bomb Essen and took off from airfield at Skipton on Swale airfield at 20.07hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target area at 22.04hrs from 22,000 feet. On landing at Skipton on Swale at 01.39hrs the aircraft touched down on the starboard wheel only, the starboard wing tip struck the ground and while the pilot then managed to get the aircraft onto both the main wheels it swung off the runway but came to rest without the undercarriage collapsing.
