Halifax LW394 at Tholthorpe airfield.
There is an AM Form 1180 for this incident and it states that at 02.50hrs on 28th December 1944 this 425 Squadron aircraft was having it's engines ground run prior to taking off for an operational flight to bomb Opladen. It was correctly positioned against chocked wheels. Because a vehicle was left close to the aircraft and the ground surface was icy an unauthorised member of ground crew (who probably thought he was doing a good turn) got into the lorry and attempted to drive it clear of the aircraft but selected the wrong gear and reversed it into the aircraft. Minor damage to the aircraft resulted. Blame was put on the driver of the vehicle who had originally driven and left it in the way. The damage must have been very very minor if the squadron records are correct as Halifax LW394 took off at 03.38hrs for the operational sortie.
Pilot - F/O William McIntyre Mark RCAF (J/29775).
