Halifax LW362 at Snaith airfield.

During the afternoon of 25th August 1944 this 51 Squadron aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training flight. At the controls was a lesser experienced pilot flying with a much more experienced pilot, a further seven airmen and possibly two members of the ATC (making eleven in total). While making a landing at Snaith at 15.29hrs the aircraft swung to starboard, the pilot attempted to correct the swing but over-corrected it and the aircraft ground looped causing the port undercarriage to collapse. On the face of it the damage would not seem to have been that severe but after assessment it was deemed beyond repair and was written off.

William Chorley's Bomb Command losses book for 1944 lists the two members of the ATC named below. These names are not given in the 51 Squadron records (which are very poor at detailing non-operational mishaps) so I presume the Snaith airfield records mention the incident and name the ATC boys.

Pilot - F/Sgt Kenneth Fredric Mitchell RAFVR (1585802).

Pilot (instructor) - F/Lt Ian Cameron Gilchrist RAFVR (171733).

Nine further airmen - Names unknown.

Passenger - Cpl W Thompson ATC.

Passenger - Cpl J Darwin ATC.
