Halifax LW289 at Riccall airfield.

During the morning of 21st June 1944 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a training flight that involved the pupil pilot training to fly with one of the four engines shut down. After nearly an hour flying the pupil pilot made an approach to land at Riccall airfield using three engines but stalled the aircraft before landing. The instructor took control, applied power to the engines and attempted to stop the aircraft from landing to fly an overshoot. Unfortunately the forward speed was too low and the aircraft would not climb so the power to the engines was cut and raised the undercarriage. The aircraft was put down in a field around half a mile west of the airfield at 11.02hrs. Three members of the seven man crew sustained minor injuries.

Pilot (instructor) - F/Lt Colin Campbell Kane RAFVR (122503). Injured.
