Halifax LW138 at Pocklington airfield.
At noon on 7th May 1944 this 102 Squadron aircraft was being flown on an instructional flight that was giving one of the named pilots training and experience in flying the Halifax MkIII type that 102 Squadron had just received. With the starboard outer engine feathered the instructor made an approach to land. Once over the airfield, to give the pupil a demonstration in how to fly an overshoot on three engines and when the aircraft was around 20-30 feet off the ground the instructor applied power to demonstrate flying an overshoot. Unfortunately the starboard inner engine then failed. Being unable to climb away on just the port engines the pilot made a forced landing in a field beyond the runway at 12.15hrs but the undercarriage must have been up as all the engines were damaged. The damage to the aircraft was not repaired.
