Halifax LW117 damaged in the air, returned to Carnaby airfield.

During the evening of 9th August 1944 the crew of this 424 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb a target at Prouville. The crew took off from Skipton on Swale airfield at 18.43hrs. They released their bomb load as directed by the master bomber from 16,500 feet at 20.46hrs but sustained damage by flak. On their return to England the crew had to divert to the crash strip at Carnaby because of a lack of brake pressure where they landed at 22.55hrs. Carnaby airfield's records states the aeroplane had been "shot up by enemy action". It was repaired at Carnaby and was airborne again at 12.14hrs the following day.
