Halifax LV991 at Skipton on Swale airfield.

During the afternoon of 8th September 1944 this 424 Squadron aircraft was flown on a training exercise that involved the crew practicing H2S homing for bomb release. During the flight the port outer engine failed so was shut down and the propeller feathered. At 14.00hrs an approach to land at Skipton on Swale was made but the pilot overshot the approach to land and touched down far too far along the runway. In the remaining space it was not possible to stop the aircraft, it struck a gun pit with the port undercarriage which was then broken off as a result of the collision.

Pilot - F/O Joseph Rodgers Hollinger RCAF (J/86077).
