Halifax LV969 at Leeming airfield.
On the night of 8th / 9th June 1944 this 429 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb a target at Mayenne and took off from Leeming airfield at 23.13hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target from 4,000 feet at 01.52hrs. On their return to Yorkshire the weather had become bad so, with rain and low cloud effecting visibility at 04.39hrs the crew struggled to locate the runway. Unfortunately no diversionary airfields were made available and the lighting on the ground was poor so when they did land the aircraft touched down too far along the runway. The pilot could stop the aircraft in the space remaining and it overshot off the end resulting in minor damage.
