Halifax LV947 at Skipton on Swale airfield.
At 12.30hrs on 7th May 1944 this 424 Squadron aircraft landed at Skipton on Swale airfield following a transit flight. The crew had begun a cross country training flight some four days earlier but owing to mechanic problems and poor weather they landed away from their base. The aircraft was servicable and the weather more favourable on the morning of the 7th so they flew the forty minute flight back to Skipton on Swale where they were based. After landing the crew began to taxi around the airfield back towards their dispersal point. Unfortunately it was being taxied too quickly and the pilot selected the wrong dispersal point. The brakes had overheated owning to prolonged use so lost efficiency and being taxied too quickly saw it not be able to stop in the dispersal point. A collision then occurred with 433 Squadron Halifax LW361 and minor damage to both aircraft resulted. The crew were new to 424 Squadron.
Pilot - F/O Michael Richard Tidy RCAF (J/25833).
