Halifax LV823 at Leconfield airfield.
At 01.00hrs on 8th May 1944 a collision occurred on the ground at Leconfield between two 466 Squadron aircraft with Halifax LV936 that was parked and empty being struck by Halifax LV823. Very minor damage resulted to LV823. A vague AM Form 1180 states that the incident occurred during a night training exercise. 466 Squadron undertook operational sorties to bomb a target at Morsalines and they took off at around 01.00hrs. Eight aircraft of the squadron were meant to have taken off but only six managed to get airborne though the squadron records do not list the two that did not get off the ground. I just wonder whether the crew of LV823 were one of the eight, with the aircraft having this mishap prior to taking off. Operational take-offs did not normally mix with night flying exercises.
