Halifax LV819 at Holme on Spalding Moor airfield.

On 21st January 1944 Halifax LV819 was allotted to 78 Squadron as a new aircraft, having just been built and completed by Handley Page Ltd. Ten days later it was to be flown to Breighton to join 78 Squadron but for unknown reasons it landed at Holme on Spalding Moor. On landing the aircraft overshot the runway, coming to rest once it had passed through a ditch at the end of the runway. Two of the four crew sustained injuries. The ditch damaged the undercarriage and the damage was inspected and deemed repairable even though the AM Form 1180 states that this ditch claimed its third write-off victim in LV819. Bomber Command HQ took some convincing that the ditch required filling in though this appears to have eventually happened.

Pilot - F/Sgt Albert Laurence McCarthy RAFVR (1506085).
