Halifax LV817 at Breighton airfield.

During the early hours of 3rd February 1944 this 78 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to lay mines. The aircraft took off from Breighton at 02.05hrs and the crew released their mines from 15,000 feet at 04.29hrs. On landing at Breighton at 07.43hrs the aircraft swung off the runway and struck the tail of Halifax LW517 that was parked some distance from the runway. LV817 continued and ran into a bank that caused the starboard undercarriage leg to collapse. Halifax LV817 was damaged beyond repair while LW517 was only very slightly damaged.
