Wellington LP240 at Finningley airfield.
On 4th March 1944 the crew of this 18 Operational Training Unit aircraft were making a transit flight from Ossington to Finningley. They took off from Ossington at 15.25hrs and thirty five minutes later they attempted to land at Finningley but in a cross wind. The first landing was unsuccessful and as it began to drift off the runway the pilot attempted to overshoot but the aircraft hit the ground before the engines picked up power. As the aircraft was subsequently written off I assume the undercarriage legs collapsed before it came to a halt.
Pilot - Sgt W A Stewart RAF.
