Lancaster LM746 at Carnaby airfield.

On the night of 28th / 29th October 1944 the crew of this 467 Squadron aircraft were to undertake an operational flight to Bergen and took off from Waddington at 22.32hrs. In poor visibility at 22.45hrs the were struck by Lancaster NN714 over Newark which severely damaged the port wing. Four members of the crew then baled out and one airman dislocated his shoulder in a bad landing resulting in him being admitted to hospital. The three remaining crew flew the aircraft over to the North Sea, jettisoned their bomb load off Mablethorpe at 23.20hrs and landed the aircraft at Carnaby at 00.32hrs. The crew of the other 467 Squadron aircraft were able to re-trim their aircraft and land at Waddington despite loosing three feet of the starboard wing tip, they landed at 00.32hrs but may have blocked the runway as all other 467 Squadron that returned from ops were diverted to Marston Moor.
