Lancaster LL643 landed at Burn airfield.

This incident is a little of a mystery. The No.6 Group Flying Control log gives basic information on 23rd April 1944 that "Q/408 - Mid Under Gunner - has broken arm due to evasive action". On the face of it this incident should have been an easy event to match to details given in 408 Squadron records and also in Linton on Ouse's station records. There is however nothing that matches such an event. On the night of 22nd / 23rd April 1944 "-Q" was Lancaster LL643, this did undertake an operational flight, taking off at 22.43hrs, bombing Dusseldorf at 01.22hrs and landing at Burn at 03.49hrs. Why the aircraft landed at Burn is not stated in the squadron records. The crew list for LL643 on this night gives only seven names; it did not carry a mid under gunner. I have created this webpage to add to at a later date when perhaps more information comes to light.
