Halifax LL494 at Marston Moor airfield.
On 21st November 1944 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a night circuits and landings exercise at Marston Moor airfield. For the trainee pilot it was the first such solo exercise he had carried out in the Halifax type. On attempting to make a landing the aircraft bounced and damaged the starboard undercarriage. The pilot correctly and swiftly applied full power and remained airborne to successfully overshoot and make another circuit of the airfield for another approach to land. On landing at 20.55hrs the already weakened starboard undercarriage leg collapsed and both starboard engines received damage.
Pilot - F/Sgt Frederick Robert Mitchell RAAF (436086).
