Halifax LL415 at Carnaby airfield.
During the morning on 19th August 1944 this 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise using Sandtoft airfield. On one of the take offs the crew retracted the wheels while the aircraft was only just airborne and the aircraft then sank causing the partly retracted wheels to brush the concrete. The undercarriage received damage and although the crew got the aircraft into the air the undercarriage would not then lock down when it came to land. Owing to the possibility of a more serious incident the aircraft was diverted to land at the emergency landing strip at Carnaby where aircraft made a belly landing at 11.56hrs.
