Halifax LL226 at Carnaby airfield.

During the afternoon of 23rd January 1944 this 77 Squadron aircraft was flown on a training flight and while in the air the port inner engine temperature rose and began to emit smoke. This engine was shut down and the propeller feathered but a short time later the same thing happened with the starboard inner engine. By this stage the crew must have already been heading towards the emergency landing strip at Carnaby because flying on just two engines the aircraft would not maintain height. The aircraft made an approach to land at Carnaby but the undercarriage would not lower and the crew did not have time to pump it down by hand so made a belly landing at 15.00hrs.

Pilot - P/O James Robert Martin RCAF (J/18724).
