Halifax LL175 at Dishforth airfield.

During the night of 16th / 17th June 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a training flight and it landed at Dishforth at 02.40hrs on conclusion of the exercise. After landing the pilot began to taxi it back to a dispersal point when an engine seized in front of one of the hangers. The pilot stopped the Halifax close to the watch office and off the engines and left it in the care of ground crew. In the coming few minutes a number of other aircraft managed to manoeuvre around it to get to their dispersal points. At 03.15hrs it was struck from behind by Halifax LL174 because its pilot had failed to notice it. Both aircraft sustained minor damage; LL175 to the tail and LL174 required new propellers and engine cowlings.

No crew.

Halifax LL175 had been piloted by F/O C A D Steepe and crew who were posted to 419 Squadron three days later.
