Halifax LL151 at Dishforth airfield.
During the afternoon of 30th October 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a combined air to air firing exercise and a bombing practice, the exercise was probably carried out off the Yorkshire coast. The exercise appears to have gone without incident and the crew landed at Dishforth at 17.50hrs following the 2.45 hour long flight. While taxying around the airfield the starboard inner engine burst into flames and while the crew operated the Graviner fire extinguisher system they swiftly left the aircraft. The airfield fire tender then arrived and put out the fire although further flying was delayed for 45 minutes until the fire was out and aircraft was towed to a hanger.
