Halifax LK880 at Linton on Ouse airfield.
On the night of 31st May / 1st June 1944 this 426 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb a radio installation at Au Fevre and took off from Linton on Ouse airfield at 22.08hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target at 00.15hrs. The aircraft was flown back toward Linton on Ouse but on the approach to land the starboard outer engine cut out, a landing was made at 02.47hrs before the propeller could be feathered and after touching down the aircraft swung off the runway. The swing could not be brought under control so it ran over the grass and into the bomb dump, coming to rest in an area containing incendiary stores. The starboard undercarriage leg collapsed and the aircraft sustained damage to the starboard wing, flaps, tail wheel and undercarriage. All on board appear to have escaped injury.
