Halifax LK876 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.
On the evening of 1st August 1944 this 158 Squadron aircraft was due to have been flown on an operational flight to bomb a target at Chapelle Notre Dame and took off from Lissett airfield at 19.54hrs. Inbound toward the target at 21.34hrs the Master Bomber was heard calling the codeword "Orangeade" which meant the raid called off. The crew turned around and headed home but reduced visibility effected where all returning 158 Squadron crews landed with a good number going to Carnaby where the F.I.D.O. fog dispersal system was lit. This crew jettisoned their bomb load in the North Sea off Flamborough at 23.06hrs and then appear to have made towards Carnaby to land. While turning into the wind to line up for a landing at Carnaby the aircraft struck a house chimney that caused the port outer propeller and the reduction gear to be torn off the engine. A fire immediately broke out which was extinguished with the automatic Graviner extinguisher. The pilot remained in control and landed safely at Carnaby at 00.28hrs.
