Halifax LK876 at Carnaby airfield.

On the night of 15th / 16th September 1944 this 158 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Kiel. The crew took off from Lissett at 22.33hrs. They released some of their bomb load from 18,000 feet at 01.20hrs onto the target area. The incendiary bombs were not released on the target but were jettisoned at 01.39hrs from 16,000 feet. The crew then flew back to Yorkshire. Why this crew then diverted to land at Carnaby is not yet known but a safe landing was made at 04.21hrs. At 04.43hrs the aircraft was taxied into a dispersal point but then collided with the tail of 51 Squadron Halifax LW461 that was already parked and sat empty there. Minor damage resulted to both aircraft. LW461 suffered a damaged port rudder and tail elevators.
