Halifax LK844 at Carnaby airfield.
During the afternoon of 3rd September 1944 this 51 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Venlo airfield. The crew took off from Snaith at 15.45hrs and bombed the target area from 17,000 feet at 17.30hrs. Owing to poor weather conditions over the Snaith area all returning 51 Squadron aircraft were diverted to land at Carnaby and LK844 landed safely and normally at 19.41hrs. The following morning, as the weather conditions had improved, the 51 Squadron aircraft were preparing to take off from Carnaby to return to Snaith. At 10.30hrs Halifax LK844 was having its engines started up at Carnaby but there were no chocks under the wheels. The brakes did not hold the aircraft and it swung into Halifax LV832 causing minor damage to both aircraft. These aircraft had been marshalled too close together the previous evening.
