Halifax LK828 at Topcliffe airfield.
Duing the morning of 27th November 1944 this 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was being flown on a circuits and landings training flight that also involved shutting down one of the engines and practing landing on three engines. At 12.15hrs a normal landing was made but when the pilot attempted to apply the brakes nothing happened. The brake cable had broken and the aircraft could not be stopped before it overshot off the end of the runway and ran through a ditch. One of the undercarriage legs appears to have collapsed as two engines on one side of the aircraft sustained damage.
Pilot - F/O David Dunbar Graham DFC RCAF (J/18335).
