Halifax LK801 at Leeming airfield.
On the night of 22nd / 23rd March 1944 this 429 Squadron aircraft was to have been used to fly an operational flight to bomb Frankfurt. This crew were late in starting their aircraft for the operational sortie and at 19.10hrs the aircraft was taxied out of the dispersal to head down the perimeter track to the take off point. Owing the crew being late the aircraft was being taxied too fast and when 429 Squadron Halifax LW619 pulled out of its dispersal onto the perimeter track ahead of LK801, LK801 was travelling too fast to avoid a collision. Both aircraft received damage. The port wing of LW619 cut into the nose of LK801. LK801 received a Cat.Ac damage assessment. Both crews were deemed to blame for not keeping an adequate look out. The pilot was later awarded the DFC for service with 429 Squadron.
