Halifax LK799 at Croft airfield.

On the night of 7th / 8th August 1944 this 434 Squadron aircraft was to have been flown an operational flight to bomb a target at La Hogue in co-operation with the army in the Caen area. At 20.38hrs the aircraft swung off the runway on take off and the pilot was unable to correct the swing. With it out of control it ran over the grass and struck 434 Squadron Halifax LW176 that was waiting to take off and then ran into a brick wall causing the undercarriage to collapse. Halifax LK799 was subsequently written off while Halifax LW176 received minor damage.
